Mt Margaret East Peak 5206'
With an absoulutely stunning fall October day I wanted to take advantage. I had tried to do MMEP a couple of weeks ago and was stymied by the area stil being closed due to the Three Queens Fire. Thankfully the closure has been lifted and I was able to use FR 4832 from exit 54 off I-90. The road was in great shape and I was able to make the spur road that leads to Swan Lake without issue. I have much trepidation about driving suspect logging roads, I don't feel very proficient backing out for any meaningful length. Since the approach is short I decided to just park near the junction and walk the road to my jump off point. In hindsight the road was passable albeit a bit rough but there are plenty of spots to be able to turn around. I made my way up the road enjoying the warm sun. This approach is also used for Ugly Duckling which is included in the Home Court 100. Once reaching the road junction at 4400' I headed left for a short ways until the road ends.
I was able to pick up a climbers trail that heads up to a very nice campsite on a subtle saddle. The trail from the campsite is faint and steeper than expected but does become more defined the higher up you go. It was a little bit of struggle since I am still being hobbled by Achilles issue but I was able to press on and make the summit without much bother. The views of HI-Box and Three Queens are quite stunning. I could also see remnants of the Three Queens fire. I didn't linger long before I retraced my steps to the car. Just a marvelous day to be out.
