Although this wasn't my intent for the day it made for an exciting and memorable day. I missed going last week so I wanted to stretch it out and try for a monster x-country ski day. I wanted to go over both Mount Lillian and Bentrim Hill using many of the myriad of roads that dot the area. I toyed with a couple of starting points and settled on the Tronsen Road which would shave a few miles off. I mangaged an early start and thankfully missed the lowland snow. I parked and was off at 0800. The weather was snowing and blowing forcing me to wear nearly everything I own. Things started off well as I made the end of the road much faster than I was expecting. This good luck didn't last long. I fell and when I finally was able to unpretzel myself I noticed that my ski boot had separated from the soul and was now useless. I was thankful that I had the foresight to at least bring my regular boots so I wasn't totally screwed. I had expected that snowshoes wouldn't be necessary which was entirely the case. I decided to just leave the trail all together and make my way up the steep but mostly open slopes. The snow on the steeps was thankfully crusty enough for easier travel. In fact in some places I wished for crampons. I made steady progress and was very thankful for good clothes as I was buffeted with some strong wind. Once I reached 5575' which I believe is the highpoint of Tronsen Ridge proper, I spied some tracks below me I followed along the ridge for another .75 miles before losing interest. I found a sheltered spot and had a quick lunch. I retraced my steps to 5575' and then was only able to follow my prints for a short time. I just descended in a more direct line back to the trailhead. I had some issues with the snow on the lower slopes but was able to negotiate the minefield of voids without too much of a problem. I thankfully reached the road and enjoyed the easy walk out enjoying the very substantial snow showers.

Red Top Mt 1.12.09
I had hoped to do this last week, but with the extreme avalanche potential I thought better of it. I was happy to see the weather on the East side was going to be improved. My big worry was the conditions of 97 before Blewett Pass. I was sure the road was closed on the North side but I hadn't heard anything regarding the South side. As it turns out my choice was the last available option before the road is closed. There is substantial damage from the Teanaway river which has reduced the road to a half lane. Further along the road is roadblocked at the junction the junction where 97 heads to Ellensburgh. I decided to disregard the roadblock and keep on going. The road is closed at Mineral Springs which worked for me because the road I intended on using is just a short ways to the North. I parked at the restaurant and suited up. The weather was much warmer than expected so much of my clothing stayed stowed in my pack. I chose to use skis as today's mode of transportation. I am not the most experienced skier so I felt like the 16 mile round trip may be a little exuberant. I thought I might need snowshoes for the last portion to reach the look out but I was concerned about carrying on my pack. I was sure the descent could be littered with falls and I was trying to avoid skewering myself. There were a few tricky portions because of the previous week's heavy rain but for the most part the going couldn't have been better. There was enough snowmobile traffic on the lower portions to make trailbreaking unnecessary. As I climbed higher I was forced to plough through 6" of snow. This actually spurred me on because I felt like this cushion my falls as well as making it easier to control my speed on the long descent. I reached the Red Top Campground with fading legs. I dropped skis and pack and trudged toward the lookout. I was surprised that the final portion looked more than just a simple walk-up. I was able to find the trail to the lookout but with the soft unbroken snow I was unable to make much progress. My ski boots are not very suitable for these type of conditons. When I found the sign showing 1/2 mile to the summit I deflated and decided that a return trip in the Summer with the family similar to the one I did to Lion Rock was in order. I won't feel too bad adding this summit to my Back Court climbed list by driving nearly to the summit since I certainly put in the effort. I had a quick bite and then was off for the dreaded descent. I am not very tolerant or adept of speed on skis so I was concerned. As it turns out the descent went better than I would have hoped for. I only fell once on the lower portions when I decided to see how fast I could really go. I was very pleased with the day's events and look forward to trying something somewhat longer next week.

Lake Kathleen 12.24.08
With yet another day off work due to weather, and thankfully I am now on salary! What to do? I strapped on snowshoes to myself and the 3 yr old and we were off to find some powder. I didn't have to venture too far.
We crossed the road and headed for the rumored sledding hill. The hill was there but with so much snow it wasn't that much fun. As most 3 yr olds she lost interest so we soon found our way back home. With some extra time before the evenings festivities I thought I would break out the skis. I made sure to give them a good wax this time so that I would have a little more luck than earlier this week. I did a loop using some trails and some roads. I passed by Lake Kathleen which was frozen solid which shocked me. My lake which is slighlty higher in elevation and less than a mile away has NO ice at all. I am guessing it has to do with the lakes depths. My lake is much deeper which probably contributes to the longer freeze time. I was most pleased with my improvement on the skis I actually started to skate ski which I enjoyed immensely. It was nice that this time the snow hit here instead of somewhere else. I think we had nearly 8" inches today and it again snowing!

North Fork Snoqualmie 12.2.08
With the big dump of snow I knew climbing probably wasn't going to happen but I still wanted to get out. I chose to break out the cross country skis in hopes of getting some miles in. I had no issues on making it to the North Fork Road and once on the road it had enough travel to make the going quite easy. I had some concern about dragging bottom on the center portion of the road so I pulled off sooner than I probalby needed to. I was able to make it just North of Fuller Mt. where I found a place to park. I don't do a lot of xcountry skiing so it is always an adventure. For this trip I am not sure I would call it skiing at all. Maybe a better descriptions would have been walking with skis on. I am by no means an expert on snow but this snow sucked. I don't think I slid more than a foot the entire ten miles I went. I had hoped to drive further and head toward the old Cascade Lookout but having to pull over so far South I was content to make my way to the new bridge spanning the North Fork. The snow seemed to become worse on the way out so I ended up just walking the last two miles to the car. All in all it was a good day out but I really need to look at more suitable equipment.
